Happy Mondays #40 – Toro Y Moi « Rose Quartz »

Entre chillwave et electro, le dernier album de Chaz Bundick aka Toro y Moi, sorti en février dernier sur le label Carpark Records, devrait faire parler de lui tout au long de l’année 2013.

Notre coup de coeur (difficile de choisir cependant) : Rose Quartz.

Happy Mondays #39 – James Blake « Digital Lion »

Après un premier album éponyme acclamé, le jeune (25 ans) prodige britannique James Blake reviendra le 8 avril prochain avec un nouvel opus, Overgrown, sur le label Republic.

D’ici là, voici un nouvel extrait, Digital Lion, qui fait suite à Retrograde; le morceau est produit avec l’un des pionniers de la musique électronique, Brian Eno.

After a first acclaimed eponymous LP, the 25-year-old brit producer James Blake will strike back on April 8th with his new LP Overgrown, on the label Republic.

In the meantime, here is a the second single unveiled, Digital Lion, after the previous one, Retrograde; the track has been produced with electronic music legend, Brian Eno.

Happy Mondays #36 – SBTRKT « Trials of the Past »

SBTRKT – Trials of the Past

Vous vous souvenez peut-être, il y a quelque temps déjà, à l’époque de l’électro/rock/trash à la Justice, d’avoir vu émerger un groupe au nom apparemment imprononçable car privé de voyelles, MSTRKRFT (soit « Mastercraft », ndlr).

Ce petit rappel devrait vous permettre de prononcer correctement le nom de scène de l’Anglais Aaron Jerome aka SBTRKT.

Caché derrière un masque de tribu africaine, ses prestations live – avec son chanteur Sampha – ont largement contribué à sa notoriété. Il a d’ailleurs sorti un un LP sobrement intitulé Live, à l’instar du Alive 1997 des Daft Punk.

Son album éponyme, sorti en 2011 sur le label Young Turks, est un petit bijou où se mêlent avec brio dubstep, house, R&B…Voici le clip mi gore / mi science fiction sorti en début d’année pour le morceau « Trials of the Past » – attention âmes sensibles, « quelques » effusions de sang…

You might remember, a little while ago, at the age of electro / trash / rock à la Justice, emerging an act with a name without vowels, MSTRKRFT (soit « Mastercraft », ndlr).

This reminder should help you reading and pronouncing the moniker of UK-based Aaron Jerome aka SBTRKT.

Hidden behind an African tribe mask, his live gigs – with his singer Sampha – have largely contributed to build his reputation. He has just released an LP simply entitled Live, reminding of the Alive 1997 from mask-wearers Daft Punk.

His eponymous LP, out back in 2011 on the Young Turks imprint, is a real gem gathering together dubstep, house, R&B…
Here is the video unveiled earlier in 2013, halfway between gore and sci-fi, for the track « Trials of the Past » – beware, « some » bloodshed…

Happy Mondays #31 – Boston Bun « Housecall »

Un Thibaut peut en cacher un autre…Après Thibaut Berland aka Breakbot il y a déjà quelques temps, Pedro Winter (interview pas mal ici) a trouvé un nouveau protégé pour son label Ed Banger en la personne de Thibaut Noyer aka Boston Bun.

La nouvelle recrue s’est déjà illustrée avec des remixes pour Myd (Club Cheval) ou The Aikiu; mais Housecall est son premier maxi. Et c’est le titre éponyme qui, près de 3 mois après sa sortie (edit : oui, ça n’est pas frais du jour mais c’est quand même très bon), retient toujours notre attention.

Happy Mondays #27 – Scratch Massive « Paris (Darabi Remix) »

Près d’un an après la sortie de « Nuit de rêve » (voir la critique ici par exemple), leur 3ème album en 10 ans, Maud Geffray et Sébastien Chenut aka Scratch Massive ont livré le mois dernier le maxi « Paris » , dont on a choisi de vous faire découvrir l’excellent remix par le duo parisien Darabi

« Paris » est riche en featurings puisque côté audio, on retrouve la voix du leader du groupe islandais GusGus, Daniel Agust; et côté clip (à découvrir ci-dessous), Cécile Cassel sous la direction de Zoé Cassavetes, qui a déjà réalisé plusieurs clips pour le duo.

More than one year after the realease of « Nuit de rêve » (see review here for instance), their third album in 10 years, Maud Geffray and Sébastien Chenut aka Scratch Massive delivered last month their new EP, « Paris » , out of which we picked up the huge remix by Parisian outfit Darabi

« Paris » is full of featurings as on the audio side, you may recognize the voice of Icelandic act GusGus’ leader, Daniel Agust; and on the video side (see above), French actress Cécile Cassel directed by Zoé Cassavetes, who has already directed a couple of videos for the French duo.

Leur album « In the Grace of Your Love » sorti il y a tout juste un an a fait un carton, notamment grâce à leur titre phare « How Deep Is your Love ». Mais ce qui est appréciable avec le rock de The Rapture, c’est qu’il se prête très bien aux remixes.

Leur label DFA (LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost!, Cut Copy, …) a sorti il y a quelques temps le maxi de remixes de « Children » , avec aux manettes Darkstarr, Lopazz et Jonathan Kreinik aka…AKA JK. C’est le remix hypnotique de ce dernier que l’on préfère et que l’on vous propose ci-après

Happy Mondays #19 – Panama « It’s not over »

Panama – It’s Not Over (Futur Classic Australia)

Après le succès (underground, mais quand même) de leur premier titre Magic, les australiens de Panama reviennent sur l’excellent label de même nationalité Futur Classic avec le tout aussi excellent titre It’s Not Over, ballade indie rock / electro produite par Eric Broucek du label new-yorkais DFA (LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost!, Cut Copy).

En attendant la sortie du maxi le 2 novembre, vous pouvez regarder le clip réalisé par les berlinois de A Nice Idea Every Day, qui nous livrent une sorte de réinterprétation de la cavale de Bonnie & Clyde. Enjoy!

The EP will be realeased November 2nd, so in the meantime you may wait watching on repeat the video by Berliners from A Nice Idea Every Day, who deliver a kind of reinterpretation of Bonnie & Clyde on the loose. Enjoy!

Happy Mondays #17 – Baio « Sunburn Modern »

« We make colourful music because we dance in the dark » : c’est ainsi que Baio (Chris Baio, bassiste de Vampire Weekend ndlr) décrit sa musique, une electro baléarique sexy et euphorisante.

L’excellent maxi « Sunburn » est sorti avant l’été chez Greco-Roman (label de Joe Goddard d’Hot Chip, qui a sorti également des maxis de Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Drums Of Death et Disclosure); un maxi de remixes (avec notamment une version de Session Victim) est en cours de finalisation.
